Why it happens with AI
The dial sets itself by default whenever the leader does not set it deliberately. Performance pressure, speed culture, and the generic register fluent corporate writing has settled into all reward the absent end. Without the axis named, leaders read alarmist and enthusiast writing without a frame that reconciles them, and drift defensively. Most leaders spend most weeks closer to the absent pole than they would choose if they could see the choice. The axis has to be named before it can be resisted.
What working on it does, impact and benefits
Once the axis is named, the leader can score real pieces of work, spot the drift before it becomes house style, and pick the move that pulls the dial in the chosen direction. Over months, dial-setting becomes deliberate rather than accidental. The proxy that AI is already training in fragments becomes one the leader has shaped.
